About MoveMap
MoveMap is an informational site that compares US cities side-by-side for relocation planning. Every page is built from public data; no estimates are guessed or generated by language models.
Data sources
- Distance & drive time: OpenStreetMap routed via OSRM.
- Cost of living: BEA Regional Price Parities, BLS CPI.
- Climate: NOAA U.S. Climate Normals 1991-2020.
- Crime: FBI Crime Data Explorer. Rates are reported per capita with year and methodology (NIBRS/SRS) stamped.
- Demographics: U.S. Census Bureau ACS 5-year.
- Jobs & wages: BLS OEWS.
- Housing values: Zillow Research Data (ZHVI, ZORI).
- ZIP geography: HUD USPS ZIP Code Crosswalk Files.
- City coordinates: SimpleMaps US Cities (CC-BY 4.0).
Methodology
Each pair page precomputes routing, cost-of-living, climate, crime, demographic, jobs, and housing comparisons at build time. We store the computed figures in the site repository — there are no runtime API calls — so pages remain consistent until the next ingest pass.
Update cadence
- Census ACS: annual (5-year moving averages).
- BEA RPP: annual.
- BLS CPI: monthly (MSAs with coverage).
- BLS OEWS: annual (May release).
- FBI CDE: annual.
- NOAA Normals: static (1991-2020 period).
- Zillow ZHVI/ZORI: monthly (released on the 16th).
- OSRM graph: refreshed every 3-6 months.
